It is a common misconception that Scots of the surname Lundie, Lundy and Lundin, have different origins, and that Lundins descend from a family from Fife; Lundies from a family from Lundie near Doune in Perthshire, or Lundie in Angus; and persons of the name Lundy are assigned as either one or the other. In fact they all share common decent from Phillip de Lundin, who in 1164 was granted the Barony of Lundin in Fife by King Malcolm IV of Scotland.

Sir Robert Douglas in his 1798 work "The Baronage of Scotland" described this family as one of the most ancient in Scotland; and other works have described them as at one time amongst the most influential and powerful in Scotland. However, until recently very little has been written upon this family.

In 2005, the first and only book dedicated to the history of this family was published, containing over 500 pages describing its history. This website gives an overview of this history, complete details of which can be found in the book "History of the Clan Lundy, Lundie, Lundin. One of the most ancient families of the Kingdom of Scotland".
